Experience the New River Gorge
BASE Jumping
Bridge Day is the largest BASE jumping event in the world, held on the third Saturday in October every year in Fayetteville, West Virginia. Over 450 BASE jumpers and up to 200,000 spectators are expected to attend this year’s Bridge Day on Saturday, October 16, 2010. The New River Gorge Bridge is the world’s 2nd longest single arch bridge, providing the launch point for six hours (9am-3pm EST) of legal, safe BASE jumps.
Bridge Day Rappel
The Bridge Day Rappel will consist of several teams who will be allowed to ascend and/or descend a fixed rope from the catwalk beneath the New River Gorge Bridge on Bridge Day. Bridge Day Rappel teams are chosen by a lottery drawing in June of each year. The rappel participant must be a seasoned rappeller with proper rack training who has successfully completed at least a 250’ rappel.
Bridge Day High Line
The Bridge Day high line will return to Bridge Day this year. The high line rider will slide approximately 700 feet down a rope attached to the bridge’s catwalk to the Fayette Station Road below. The high line is open to the media and the general public. You too can have the ride of a lifetime!
Whitewater Rafting
White water rafting on the New River is our claim to adventure fame. It’s called America’s Best Whitewater, and the best thing about it is getting smacked in the face with a wave. It’s as if the experience doesn’t quite sink in until the river comes right up and says hi.
These rapids are some of the best in the world. If you’ve come to find an exciting river trip, you’ve hit the mother lode. Between the New and its sister, the Gauley River, there’s a whitewater experience for anyone who’s ever wanted to paddle.
There are other great parts of a river trip, too. The guides are like a separate species that need to be studied by the world’s top cultural anthropologists. They live with fun at the center of everything they do.
The scenery is big. The standards are high. Float down through the gorge and you’re challenged to find something to not take a picture of. Relax. Enjoy. Thrill. Soak it up. Because there’s nowhere else on earth that’s like it.
